European Young Journalist Award is a competition with main idea to
communicate the successes and the little human stories of EU enlargement.
By initiating exchange and networking among young editors from the
European Union, candidate countries (Croatia, Turkey and the Former
Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) and potential candidate countries
(Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia with the province
of Kosovo under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244),
the benefits of the enlargement process will become apparent.
There will be a national winner for each of the 34 participating
countries, who will be invited to a trip through the Balkan countries
with stops in Belgrade and Sarajevo. The trip will conclude with a
conference in Ljubljana in June 2008 (with participation of the mentors
and several media representatives).
Young editors aged 17-27 in the all participating countries are asked
to submit an article on the issue of EU enlargement which has been
published in the period from January 2007 until March 2008. Participants
should be active editors of school or student print and online publications
or interns, freelancers, or trainees working for print or online publications.
They are asked to submit an article in their native language on EU
enlargement, with the deadline on 15 March 2008, dealing with one
of the following topics:
- From 6 to 27 countries, what do you think about the European integration
in the last 50 years, and its future enlargements?
- What do you consider the benefits and challenges of future enlargements
of the EU?
- How do you feel about your country joining or belonging to the
EU?
- What is the purpose and/or added value of opening the EU to new
Member states?
- What does the term "European values" mean to you? When
new countries join the EU, do you think European values evolve?
- Do you feel like an European citizen? Do you think most people
in your country feel like you?
A competition website will serve as a central point of information
during the entire competition period. A team of 12 editors will be
writing articles on issues related to enlargement: travelling in Europe,
working as a European citizen, studying abroad, etc. Users will have
the possibility to upload articles, videos, pictures and audio materials.
The website is just launched these days on web address: www.EUjournalist-award.eu.
The articles for the competition will be submitted online via the
competition website and a maximum length is 2,000 words. It should
be written in a journalistic style and may represent the personal
perspective of the writer in the context of his/her country.
National juries consisting of three media representatives and one
representative of the European Commission will be established in each
of the 34 eligible countries as well as Kosovo (under UNSCR 1244)
and each national jury will select one article from the submissions
made in their respective country as that country's national winner.
Juries select winners according to the following criteria: relevance
of information in relation to the topic; originality of treatment
of the subject; journalistic style and quality of writing; ability
to catch the reader's attention; and effort made in the preparation
of the article.
Winning articles will be published on the competition website and
all national winners will be invited on a group trip to the South
East of Europe with visits to two capital cities and ending with a
closing conference in Slovenia in June 2008.
