Austria - "a paradise for war criminals"?

The Sun enters the Nazi's lair
I looked into the ice-blue eyes of one of the world's most wanted Nazis and was chilled by the piercing stare of a man who has evaded justice for more than 60 years. And yesterday wartime Croatian police chief Milivoj Asner sensationally declared he is ready to face trial. The Sun caught up with the world's fourth-most hunted Nazi as he mingled with Euro 2008 football fans in his adopted home town of Klagenfurt, Austria... >>

Germany battles neo-Nazi violence
Two months ago, Horst Köhler, Germany's president, congratulated Israel on its 60th birthday in a statement reiterating that Germany was aware of its responsibility for the Holocaust and remained committed to combating racism and anti-Semitism. But Germany's Jewish community has complained Berlin is not doing enough to stop frequent incidents of neo-Nazi violence against Jewish sites and ethnic minorities, which include the country's three million Muslims. We bring you a part of the article that was published in The National Newspaper on May 8

Referendum on Lisbon Treaty
The Irish "No"
This result seems somewhat irrational, having in mind that Ireland is the country which has benefited most from its EU membership. It has endured great change - from the small and poor country it was in 1973 it turned into the "tiger" it is today. Now Ireland takes the second place on GDP per capita - 146 compared to 100 for EU average according to Eurostat. A recent survey of Eurobarometer shows that 82% of the Irish think that the EU membership is beneficial for their country... >>

New surveillance programme
Swedish 'Big Brother' Law
Possible implications aren't clear yet, but Peter Fleischer, Google's spokesman is announcing withdrawal from the Swedish market, valuating new law as one to be compared with government eavesdropping measures in China, Saudi Arabia and USA. Media in Sweden will have to face problem of protecting their sources from being identified as they're exploring possibilities of communication other than through emails and phones. European Federation of Journalists is arguing that new law is stepping out of the frame of international and European legal standards... >>

International Press Institute (IPI) World Congress
Crisis of investigative journalism
One of the most interesting discussions was on the subject of the possibility of journalists' international cooperation and their mutual work on investigative stories. Analytic journalism is jeopardised by pressure and the scarcity of money, is this session's conclusion, which implies the lack of money and understanding. Such projects reveal human trafficking, drugs trafficking and other forms of criminal activities, so that the journalists themselves wonder what the possibilities, and especially the effects of their explorations are... >>

European Youth Week in Novi Sad - eYouWiNS 2008

"People, Let's Talk!"
The main goals of eYouWiNS are very similar to the other youth festivals in Europe, and that means giving opportunity to young people to connect, to meet each other and to discuss about the actual phenomenon, the stimulus to learn about the world around them through new knowledge, and to change that world with their creativity and new ideas. Personal view: about headscarves
Who is writing the scenario in Turkey?
For those who support this illicit, scarves are not like it seems to be. It is a sign of a political thinking and wearing it may threaten our freedom, or we might even be forbidden to go to universities. It's also a threat for the secular Turkish republic. At the other hand, if women are forced to take off their scarves during classes it seems like violation of human rights. We have to be free to wear whatever we want... >>

WAVE magazine researching the future of the Serbian scene (1): who is teaching actors?
Arts on the Market
All academies of arts work for prestige and good reputation, because everything is about business today, and the competition is very fierce. Numerous students are happy and sad at the same time, because of the fact there are more artistic high schools and because, allegedly, that offers them a bigger "spot under the sun". The real actors rely upon their talent, quality and hard work, the recommendation of their professors, casting partners and stars. Many ambitious young people are founding their own bands after graduation. The worthy don't sit at home, they are practicing their skills by appearing in ads or as TV speakers and presenters, and usually being underevaluated for that... >>

Bill Gates retirement
Does it really change anything for Microsoft?
Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft in 1975. Their first product was a BASIC interpreter for Altair 8800. By that time, Gates had the goal of putting a computer in every desk and every home. Indeed, as pointed in the blog Ars Technica, "In the West, at least, we have a computer on every desktop (and in every home, and I suspect before too long in every bedroom), and that wouldn't have happened without Bill Gates and Microsoft"... >>

Neuromarketing - "customers' brainwashing"
Who controls your mind?
Do we buy things because we really need them, or is it just reaction to some well created campaign? Maybe you are just following someone else's signals, and you don't even know that? Is the main goal of gigantic companies' and scientists' to satisfy our needs or to manipulate us?... >>

Wimbledon 2008 (June 23 - July 6)
A Clash of Titans
Rafael Nadal is only the second Spaniard, after Manolo Santana in 1966, to become Wimbledon's champion. Also, he is the first male since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to have achieved winning the French Open and Wimbledon back-to-back. But five straight titles in London, record made by Bjorn Borg between 1976-80, still remains intact... >>

Euro 2008 - coaches: Aragones vs Bilic
The ways of Turtle and Rock Star
First one was born in 1938, the other one 30 years later. Spaniard was the oldest coach on the last European Championship, Croat was the youngest.
