Its been a tradition already for a couple of years for the municipality
of Varna to co-organize the Students' Amateur Art (SAA) Days, in cooperation with
the students councils of Varna Universities. More than 130 students took part
this year. The main purpose of the SAA Days is to give a real opportunity to the
young Bulgarian students to present their creative work, in photography, singing,
dancing, or acting. The Students Amateur Art Days were held in the theatre hall
Stoyan Buchvarov in the city's centre. The hall, which in general is big enough,
was overcrowded, with people not only sitting, but also standing. Backstage, where
all the preparations were going on, it was more than exciting - all artists, dressed
up, waiting in stress for their act, new talents waiting to be discovered, their
mentors helping out with whatever they can, mothers encouraging their children
to try off, girlfriends waving to their boyfriends behind the stage curtain. Whoever
said backstage is much more fun was right.
Sixteen
youngsters had a solo performance and six groups presented their programs in modern
bailey and national folklore dances. The program was more than colorful - and
even though it was amateur art, almost all of the performances were actually professional!
The highlight of the night was the young singer and student from Economical University
Teodora Slavcheva, who will compete in the Bulgarian Eurovision together with
her duet partner Teny Omede. They performed two songs, and had the audience applauding
really hard. The other extremely professional performance was the acrobatic dance
performance from Varna Free University. There were representatives from each university
from Varna - Medical University, Technical University, Varna Free University,
Economical University and Naval Academy and with their performances they just
proved their interests are not just academic, but also artistic.
Next
SAA days will be held next December (2009). Because the day of the university
students is 8th December. This is also why the SAA days always take place in between
middle of November and middle of December. Another tradition for this day is that
university students have no classes, neither exams and it's almost obligatory
to go on one or two days excursion with your course and party hard, even if it
is in middle of the week! Happily this year we started celebrating already from
November thanks to the SAA days!
