Socio-Economic Impact of Internet in Emerging and Developing Economies

Towards a Connected World
Properly harnessed, the Internet can be a powerful tool with which to address important social concerns in Serbia, such as high unemployment rates and disparity between urban and rural areas. The study shows that increasing Internet adoption should drive an increase in the number of new business activities by up to 17,000 per year by 2020, including the establishment of new independent businesses as well as new departments, units and business areas within existing firms... >>

BCG Study: Serbia
Great opportunities for Youth
On an ongoing basis, running an Internet business is cheaper, as many processes can be automated, with no need to pay staff or rent. This is particularly important for young entrepreneurs, as an automated website enables them to continue to study or work while running their businesses. Internet marketing is also cheap and global, and some of the most effective campaigns have been viral marketing initiatives that cost almost no money, relative to traditional media advertising

BCG Study: Bangladesh
Increasing new business activity
In a country like Bangladesh, the Internet can help make up for shortages in other forms of infrastructure, such as roads, by enabling people to transact across large distances. There is already evidence of new business models based on the Internet, such as providing Internet services in rural communities, Bangladesh-focused job search sites, and many other innovative ways for entrepreneurs to harness the Internet

BCG Study: Thailand
Surfing wireless
With appropriate initiatives and policies to stimulate investment and rollout of wireless infrastructure, a bottom-up, cost-benefit analysis suggests that Thailand could have 17.9M subscribers in 2020, which translates into approximately 26 subscribers per 100 population

Commentary: 2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate
Obama's adventures in Wonderland
The Nobel Peace Prize has come too early for Barack Obama. Up to now, the 44th president of the United States cannot point to any real diplomatic success and there is very little likelihood of it coming in such short-term. Even so, the Nobel committee insisted on awarding the new worldwide political star. Their reason: his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples". But with all respect to both their decision and the recipient: is that enough to be the laureate?... >>

Referendum in Ireland
A good day for Europe
On 2nd of October 2009, Ireland proved to the rest of Europe that is it on track towards the new Europe, one made of a European Union with a President, as the Lisbon Treaty proposes it. If Czech Republic will ratify the treaty as well, then we will face a stronger Europe, a more federal constituted European Union, as envisages by the Lisbon Treaty, follower of the now dead Constitutional treaty... >>

Perception on Foreigners: East vs. West of Europe
Does nationality really make a difference?
Economic security is one of the reasons why lots of people simply go from East to West inside Europe, but also the reason why people from Asia and Africa populate the West more than the East. As Mr. Geert Wilders, Dutch politician, said: what you get in the end, is an amalgam of different nationalities and cultures that intermit with the local people, with consequences that need to be taken into account... >>

Culture & Arts

43rd BITEF - Belgrade International Theatre Festival (15-25th September)
The Crisis of Capital, the Art of Crisis
"Theater is the art form that reacts most quickly to social developments. The world is only waking up to the reality of economic crisis, but the theater has already started to react. Sociologists, anthropologists, politicians, spectators, audiences and, most of all, artists themselves are asking this question: will the crisis of capital also be a crisis of the arts? Theater in an era of crisis need not be a time of crisis of the theater. It can, instead, be the art of crisis"... >>

Reportage: from Russia to Germany in a truck
On the road...
After a while the truck drivers started using their own language - swear language, and it was getting hard to communicate with them. The first night we stayed over they decided to relax; my driver and the driver of the cameraman went together to a road bar and drank beer. I do not know if I should explain how the Russians drink, but they drink a lot. That time the drivers drank not too much, just a few bottles of beer. I thought it was ok, probably, they were tired of driving... >>
