Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence 2009

The Robert Bosch Stiftung and ERSTE Foundation, in cooperation with the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network, BIRN, are pleased to announce the third year of the Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence programme.

To mark two tumultuous decades of both fragmentation and European integration since the collapse of the Iron Curtain and the descent into armed conflict in many Balkan nations, journalists are invited to explore the broad concept of "Identity" in the contemporary landscape.

Journalists from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania or Serbia are encouraged to submit research proposals for a 2,000 word journalistic article.

Through an open competition, ten journalists will be selected to participate in a seven month programme. The journalists will receive funding and professional support to conduct research, both in the region and in the European Union, culminating in publication and Europe-wide promotion of their reports at the end of the year.

Successful applicants will receive a bursary of 2,000 Euros and a travel allowance of up to 2,000 Euros. A selection committee comprised of prominent journalists will additionally award one fellow with an individually-tailored opportunity for further professional development, to the value of 8,000 Euros.

Applications must be received no later than March 1, 2009.

The Pulitzer prizes for online editions

The Pulitzer Committee has decided to recognize and include online-only publications. It is not obligated that you are American citizen in domain of journalism, but newspapers should be published at least once a week in America.

The Pulitzer Prize is an American prestigious award for newspaper journalism, literary achievements and musical composition. Its administration is at Columbia University in New York City. The prize was invented and established by Joseph Pulitzer, a Hungarian-Jewish-American journalist and newspaper publisher. The first prize of this kind was awarded on June 4, 1917 and since then it has been announced each April. The thing that is crucial is that in public service category award is given to the newspaper, not the individuals, no matter if he/she has contributed to it.

To be a part of this prestigious race yout newspapers should be published at least once a week in U.S.A. or on American website, according to the decision made on December 8, 2008. Hereafter, the great importance is given to original reporting and coverage of ongoing stories as well as adherence to the highest journalistic principles, as it is written on official web site. In category of journalism there are 14 subcategories and all of them do consider online editions.

According to Gissler, administrator of the Prizes, including online-only publications is important step forward which shows the readiness to adapt to growth of online journalism.

Federer wins US Open title for the fifth time in a row!

Serena Williams and Roger Federer are the winners of US Open 2008. The last grand slam tournament in the season has brought interesting and high-quality tennis. The best among ladies was domestic player Serena Williams who defeated Jelena Jankovic in the final match and won her 9th Grand slam title, 3rd in New York. Talking about men, ex-King Roger Federer waked up and saved the season with winning at least one grand slam title this year. He was better from Andy Murray in the final, very convincing and superb play.

The greatest disappointment was early elimination of girl's No.1 before US Open - Ana Ivanovic, and nice surprises came from Andy Murray with completely excellent American tour, Juan Martin del Potro who was beaten by British in quarter finals, Gilles Muller from Luxembourg and among girls - Sibill Bammer and Katarina Srebotnik, as well as experienced Patty Schnyder.

Tennis season is closing to its end now and the rest of the tournaments will be a chance for reserving place at the final games of the season - Masters in Doha (women) and Shanghai (men).
